New York is the mecca of business, fashion, pizza, freedom, and now online schooling! Today many private and public institutions offer online classes, making it possible for even the busiest of New Yorkers to earn a degree. The New York State Education Department has made significant pushes in recent years to develop the education programs offered statewide. According to the Open Education Database, there are almost 200 online education institutions in New York. The State University of New York (SUNY) alone offers over 400 online programs and 12,000 courses. Educational opportunities are endless in the big apple state, even from a distance. The best New York online colleges are open to New York residents and close neighbors.
Here are the top New York online colleges:
1. Syracuse University
The iSchool at Syracuse was established in 1993 and allows students to learn from just about anywhere. iSchool courses are taught by the same faculty as on-campus classes but are also trained to teach in an online format.
iSchool at Syracuse is a member of the WISE (Web-based Information Science Education) program, and students are free to take classes from any other institutions who participate in the WISE program. Students can choose from over 200 majors, and 100 minors to study. All master’s programs and certificate programs are offered either on campus or online.
The offerings include an MS in Information Management, an MS in Telecommunications and Network Management, a CAS in Data Science, a CAS in e-Government Management and Leadership, and a CAS in School Media. Students are required to have residency in New York and begin this process with a 7-day program on campus in July, where students immediately earn 4-credit hours and meet other online distance learning students.
- Tuition for undergraduate students is $41,794 and about $24,984 for graduate students.
2. Fashion Institute of Technology
At Fashion Institute of Technology, the courses and faculty are precisely the same for students on campus as they are in the online program. FIT offers two online applications including a one-year Fashion Business Management associate’s degree for students who have already completed over 30 hours of college credit and a two-year bachelor’s program for an International Trade and Marketing degree for students who have already completed 60 hours of credit.
Students can choose to begin their online courses at one of five varying start times throughout the year. Classes for the Fashion Business Management degree include Fashion to Business Practices, Advertising and Promotion, and Fundamentals of Textiles. Courses for the International Trade and Marketing degree include Statistical Analysis, Microeconomics, Global Sourcing, and Import/Export Regulations.
- Tuition for each credit is about $2250 for an in-state associate level student and $3235 for an in-state back Baccalaureate-level student.
3. New York University
New York University offers over 700 courses through a combination of online classes, blended classes, and low-residency programs. NYU offers a bachelor’s degree in Organizational Behavior and Change, and another degree in Leadership and Management Studies.
The institution offers several master’s programs including degrees in Computer Engineering, Professional Writing, Real Estate, Global Finance Human Resources, Management and Systems, and Business Analytics.

4. St. John’s University
St. John’s is one of the country’s largest Catholic school and offers a variety of degrees and programs. The institution offers bachelor’s degrees entirely online in Administrative Studies, Criminal Justice, and Liberal Studies, an associates degree in Business Administration, Criminal Justice, and Liberal Arts. St. John also offers several graduate programs including; Accounting, Global Development and Social Justice, Taxation, and Theology.
Online students have access to a career services center, tutoring support, a writing center, and library resources. Students can chat online with a consultant after uploading the paper. They can also message librarians online who respond to questions within an hour. St. John’s provides technical support for the school’s online management systems, Blackboard and MySJU.

5. Pace University
Pace University is well known for the bachelor’s programs offered 100% online, specifically for the Criminal Justice program. The school offers bachelor’s programs in Business Studies, Nursing, Professional Communications Studies, and Professional Technology Studies.
This institution is perfect for students who have already completed a degree at another school, but want to further their education by either completing another degree or finishing one they previously started. Pace’s online program offers advisement services, accessible faculty, career services, and access to campus facilities if desired.
- Tuition is dependent upon which program you choose to pursue but ranges from about $555 to $680 per credit hour.
6. The New School
The New School offers a bachelor’s program in Liberal Arts, four master’s programs including Media Studies at the School of Media Studies and Strategic Design, and Management at Parson’s School of Design, and five other certificate programs. These programs are offered asynchronously, allowing students to log onto the online management system whenever their schedule permits.
Students who do not want to complete a full bachelor’s degree also have the option of taking individual classes for credit to supplement their learning on campus. There are more than 200 online classes offered annually to The New School students. The Middle States Commission of Higher Learning accredits The New School.
- Tuition ranges from $1100 to $1500 per credit hour depending on the program the students choose to pursue.
7. Rochester Institute of Technology
The Rochester Institute of Technology online offers a bachelor’s degree in Applied Technology. There are also 14 various master’s programs including, but not limited to, Applied Statistics, Human Resource Development, Manufacturing Leadership, and Product Development. Online students have access to library services, career opportunity services, and academic advising services.
- Tuition ranges per credit depending on the course from $850-$955 per credit hour.
8. Vaughn College
Students can earn their aviation degree or a certificate at Vaughn College. There are five different degrees offered entirely online at Vaughn including studies like; Aviation Maintenance, Airport Management, and a certificate in Airport Management and Airline Management.
The institution offers a variety of ways to learn including video conferencing, online video streaming, lectures on DVD, and access to SAKAI, an online course management system. Students can enroll either during the Fall or Spring semester for a 16-week course or during the summer for a 6-week session.
- Tuition for full-time students is $10,940, or $730 per credit hour for part-time students.
9. Touro University Worldwide
Touro offers several bachelor’s degrees including Psychology, Social Work, Business Administration and Management, and Health Sciences. Plus, the online school provides five other master’s degrees including; Psychology, Marriage and Family Therapy, and Health Sciences.
The Middle States Commission of Higher Learning accredits Touro University, and students are not required to have residency to register for all of their programs. Touro also offers an accelerated admissions process for some of their programs.
- Tuition ranges from $400-$500 depending on whether the student enrolls in a bachelor’s or master’s program.
10. Dominican College
Dominican College offers six different degrees online including; bachelor’s degrees in Social Sciences, Communication Studies, Management, Criminal Justice, and Psychology; and a master’s degree in Physical Therapy. The institution will accept anywhere from 40-70 transfer credits depending on the program.
Online students have access to career services, academic counseling, and the fitness center on campus. Classes run all year round starting every eight weeks, and students are allowed to enroll in two courses per session.

11. Mercy College
Mercy College offers several online programs including nine bachelor’s degrees in studies like; Behavioral Science and Childhood Education, Cybersecurity, Psychology, and Early Childhood Education. Mercy provides 27 master’s programs including; English Literature, Health Services Management, and Nursing.
Students access their online courses through Blackboard and have direct access to their professors online.
- Tuition is $735 per credit for undergraduate students and varies per credit for graduate programs.
12. New York School of Interior Design
The New York School of Interior Design offers a Basic Interior Design Certificate entirely online. This certificate program requires ten courses to finish the program; a few of these classes include; Basic Drafting, Textiles for Interiors, Design Process, and Color for Interiors.
Students are not required to have a portfolio to apply to the program. Online courses for credit are available at the regular semester to start at Fall, Spring, and Summer. Fall and Spring semesters are 15 weeks long, and the Summer semester is only six weeks long. Most classes have one lecture each week, and students will be asked to interact with their classmates through an online course management system, or through conference calls and video calls.

13. Marist College
Marist College offers a bachelor’s program in Liberal Studies, and six master’s programs including; Communication, Business Administration, Public Administration, and Information Systems.
The school also offers a few advanced certificates in Information Systems and Business Analytics. Some courses are provided on an accelerated, 10-week program, replacing the traditional 15-week schedule.
Online learners have access to several resources online including an orientation of the course delivery program, a bookstore, and discussion forums with students and professors. Students should expect to spend 4 hours online in class and about 8-10 additional hours for homework.
- Tuition per credit hour for undergraduate students is $634 students and vary for graduate programs.
14. D’Youville College
D’Youville College is an excellent institution for those who are interested in earning their Bachelor of Science in Nursing for registered nurses. No previous work experience is needed, but registered nurses can receive a 50% tuition waiver. Students will receive personal attention from faculty members who assist them through their education career.
Graduate level nursing programs are also available to students at D’Youville. Students are allowed to complete their clinical hours at a location near home. The school also accepts transfer credits that apply towards the online education.
- Tuition for full-time students is $11,950 and for part-time students is $745 per credit hour.
SUNY Schools Online
SUNY Open, the state university’s online catalog, offers 55 different bachelor degrees online from Business Management, Dental Hygiene, and Electrical Engineering, to Human Development and Legal Studies. The school also provides an additional 58 master’s programs including; Childhood Education, Nursing, Accountancy, and Information Design and Technology.
Students can also earn their associate’s and doctorate’s degree online. Some of their programs are available through a hybrid program, including some online work and some class required work where students have attended campus for a few hours a week. When a student registers for a particular program online, he is recording with the college which offers that specific program. It may be any of the following SUNY schools:
15. SUNY Buffalo University
Buffalo University has one of the best RN to BS Nursing programs in the country. There are an additional nine master’s programs offered at SUNY Buffalo, including; Rehabilitation Counseling, Social work, Education and Technology, and Library Science. In addition to these degrees, Buffalo offers a wide variety of certification programs, and individual courses students can enroll.
Students have access to academic counseling, and the course material presented through an online management system called UBlearns. All students who graduate from Buffalo’s online program are invited to attend the commencement ceremony.
- Tuition for undergraduate students who are residents of New York is $3,235 and $10,775 for non-residents.
16. SUNY College of Technology at Canton
SUNY Canton online offers ten different bachelor’s degree programs including studies like; Legal Studies, Homeland Security, Veterinary Services, Finance, Health Care Management, and Nursing. These programs include over 400 classes online to choose.
SUNY Canton ranks for having one of the most affordable Nursing schools in the nation, for being a military friendly school, and for having the best online bachelor’s programs. Students have access to online learning technicians and use the Blackboard course management system to access their classes.
- Tuition for residents earning a four-year degree is $3,235.00 each semester.
17. SUNY Empire State College
Empire State offers 32 bachelor’s programs online including; Public Affairs, Nursing, Human Development, Arts and Science, and Mathematics and Technology. Students can also earn an MBA in Healthcare Leadership, Global Leadership, and Management, various master’s degrees in Education, Liberal Studies, Policy Studies, and Nursing.
Empire State will accept up to 93 transfer credits depending on the program. Each student has a faculty member who will serve as a resource throughout the education process.
- Tuition is $453 per credit for New York residents and $925 for non-New York residents. Students who are earning an MBA are required to pay $600 per credit in tuition in state and $1,016 for non-residents.
18. SUNY College of Technology at Alfred
College of Technology at Alfred offers a bachelor’s program in Nursing and Technology Management, and an associate’s degree in Court and Real-Time Reporting, and Health and Information Technology.
Students can take an online preparedness assessment to verify they are ready to study online. Online students will have access to online tutoring sessions, help to search for a career, and can contact the Online Education Office anytime with any questions.
- Tuition is $6470 for residential students earning a bachelor’s degree.
19. SUNY College of Technology at Delhi
SUNY at Delhi offers online bachelor’s programs in Nursing, Criminal Justice, and Hospitality Management. They also offer a master’s program in Nursing and an Associates degree in Occupational Studies.
Online classes are open when the on-campus term starts each fall, winter, and spring semester, but students can take the courses at their own pace. Students have access to many online resources including online tutoring, library services, and academic advisement. Students access their online courses through an online management system called Moodle.
- Tuition per credit is about $290 until students reach full time.
20. SUNY Stony Brook University
Stony Brook offers three different bachelor’s programs including; Electrical Engineering entirely online, and two Nursing programs offered through a hybrid program. The institution also provides 13 various master’s applications including, but not limited to; Human Resource Management, Liberal Studies, Nursing Education, and Higher Education Management.
