A private, historically black graduate institution, Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science (CDU) was founded in 1966 in the wake of racial upheaval looking to improve civil rights. The Los Angeles Academy of Figurative Art (LAAFA) was founded to fill a need within the community by providing figurative and representational art classes that are taught by professional, skilled artists.
The program grew to become what is now considered one of the Best Art Schools in The World, according to American Artist Magazine. LAAFA distinguishes itself by offering 3-year accredited BFA and Certificate Programs in Entertainment Art and Fine Art that includes 18-months of intensive foundational training. Graduates from our school have a refined skill set in representation art that will set them apart from other art students. In addition, the small instructor-to-student ratio encourages communication and open dialogue within classes and outside.
